Frequently asked questions

What do the Gold and Silver tiers mean?

Gold means fully made or grown in the UK, including the main material. Silver means genuinely made in the UK but with an imported main material or some imported stock. Products merely designed, branded, printed or packed in the UK don’t qualify at all. You can see a more detailed description of each tier on the Gold & Silver page.

Why is a famous British brand only Silver?

It’s important to emphasise that the Gold and Silver tiers are nothing to do with the quality of the goods being made or the reputation of the business. Purchasing from Silver businesses is still a very helpful boost to the UK economy. The only difference between Gold and Silver is the supply chain of the materials used. Think of it more of a factual statement instead of a judgement.

Do businesses pay to be listed?

No. Nobody pays for a listing, a tier, or placement — and nobody can. Tiers are decided by evidence alone, and every listing shows its evidence publicly.

How do businesses get on the map?

We research and verify each listing against public evidence from the business’s own website, reports, articles or asking them directly. However, we are always looking to add great UK businesses to the map, so if you know of one please suggest a business; every suggestion is then checked against the standard before it appears.

Are all the locations on the map accurate?

Not always exactly. Where a business has a shop, showroom or farm shop open to the public, we pin it as accurately as we can. Other pins only show the town, city or county where a business is based: many online-only businesses have nowhere to visit, and makers who work from home have their pin placed in the surrounding area so their home address stays private. If you would like to visit a business, please contact them first to check this is possible. If you run a listed business and your pin is in the wrong place, please let us know.

Something on the map is wrong — how do I report it?

Please contact us with the listing name and what’s wrong. If you own one of the Silver businesses and believe you should be Gold, please do reach out to us and we’ll gladly review the new evidence.

Why isn’t my favourite maker listed?

It’s totally possible that we are yet to discover some fantastic UK businesses. If you think this is the case then please tell us about them and we’ll check them out.
